A stunning open air theatre in the heart of the thirty-eight acre Kilworth estate, this 540 seat theatre, now in its 10th season, is dedicated to large scale professional productions of musical theatre. The theatre is the brainchild of Celia Mackay, owner of the award-winning and luxurious Kilworth House Hotel, beautifully situated amidst the rolling countryside of South Leicestershire. The 540 seat theatre is protected against the elements by a magnificent sail-like canopy, as is the stage area, so that no performance need ever be cancelled because of adverse weather. Indeed their motto is “Kilworth House Theatre – where rain won’t stop play”. A state-of-the-art lighting and sound system has been installed in keeping with Celia’s intention to present professional productions and entertainment of the highest quality.
Following the huge success of the productions of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE (2 seasons), OKLAHOMA!, CRAZY FOR YOU, GUYS AND DOLLS, THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, THE OPERA SHOW, ME AND MY GIRL, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, MY FAIR LADY, ANYTHING GOES, SOUTH PACIFIC, SISTER ACT, SINGING IN THE RAIN, LEGALLY BLONDE, WEST SIDE STORY and THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, the musicals at Kilworth House Theatre in the 2017 season will be KISS ME KATE and TOP HAT.
Winner of no less than 3 Laurence Olivier awards including Best New Musical, ‘Top Hat’ brings the glamour of Hollywood’s golden age and the glorious, tap-dancing magic of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to the stage in one of
the greatest dance musicals of all time. Based on the 1935 movie of the same name, ‘Top Hat’ is packed full of Irving Berlin’s greatest hits including ‘Cheek to Cheek’, ‘Top Hat’, ‘White Tie & Tails’, ‘Let’s Face the Music & Dance’ and ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ and tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont. In a riotous mistaken-identity plot, Dale Tremont believes that her ardent pursuer Jerry Travers – who is about to open in a big London show – is married to a friend of hers. Add in a bumbling Producer, a meddling English valet and a lovelorn fashion designer and the fun begins! An uplifting and hilarious romantic comedy celebrating the very best of 1930s song, style and romance.
